On the polar vortex and climate communications
Just a few quick thoughts on this from my vantage point as a retired communications specialist:
- There is no point in explaining how and why the polar vortex may be the result of global warming. I've seen a few articles popping up along these lines lately, and my advice is, save your breath. Even though I think it's probably true (disruption of a complex system via a massive influx of heat can lead to chaotic results), few if any climate scientists are going to be willing to provide credible support. Most of them haven't even been willing to state that extreme weather events that seem very plausibly related, such as the great U.S./Canada heat wave of spring 2012 or the terrible Russian heat wave of summer 2010, are due to human-caused climate change. Without that credible backing, you're dead in the water.
- Trying to connect the vortex and global warming sounds deceptive on its face. Any explanation of how and why the two might be connected is necessarily complex and subject to many unknowns. That being the case, what the average person hears is, "Yada, yada, everything is due to global warming." This does nothing for the credibility of science communications--instead, it just gives those in denial an easy counter.
- The polar vortex event is a one-off and should be treated as such. This just in--as I was drafting, a tweet appeared from the estimable Heidi Cullen referring to graphics from many cities showing that extreme cold events have become more rare since 1970. That's a good way to go in handling this event (and don't say "no weather event can be used to demonstrate climate"--the time is surely coming when such events will be so extreme they can no longer be ignored).
- Better to focus on the weather extremes that have been predicted by climate science and are continuing to happen as we speak. Within the past month:
Heat waves, drought, precipitation extremes--all have been predicted and are reasonable to expect as results of a warming planet.

- Australia has wrapped up its hottest year on record--not a few days or weeks, but a year, for an area as large as the U.S. (which, by the way, had its hottest year on record waay back in 2012, for those who have already forgotten).
- Torrential downpours have struck islands in the eastern Caribbean, and parts of Brazil.
- Argentina and part of Brazil have seen a record heat wave.
- December 2013 was Scotland's wettest month ever.
- California and Oregon finished their driest year ever, with rainfall amounts at a number of locations that were startlingly below previous all-time lows.
Heat waves, drought, precipitation extremes--all have been predicted and are reasonable to expect as results of a warming planet.

When 'head-on' isn't really
"City tackles climate change head-on" reads a recent article in the La Crosse, Wis., Tribune. Sounds exciting, doesn't it? But the story that follows is a letdown--enough so to inspire this brief blog post.
What La Crosse is doing:
- Hosting a climate change workshop "to build consensus about pragmatic adaptations authorities can make to changing weather." I assume this involved some serious dissemination of information about climate change's impact, so that's a good thing.
- Adding more green spaces on the city's south side to handle the runoff from heavy rain events.
- And ... that's it. Oh, perhaps not--the story makes a point of noting that La Crosse "made clear in its application that climate change a distinct challenge to [its] future."
And that seems to be the point of the headline: the city actually came right out and said, in effect, that it thinks climate change is real.
That too is a good thing, but in fact, "tackling climate change head-on" means, in the simplest of terms, reducing fossil fuel use. Everything else is just papering over the problem. In this instance (the extra green space), it's a little like giving someone with a broken arm aspirin, because his arm hurts.
Energy efficiency and non-fossil energy, as much as possible, as soon as possible, is what we need to do, or as Joe Romm puts it, "deployment, deployment, deployment" of technologies that reduce fossil fuel use. As Mr. Romm puts it here:
"The crucial climate strategy is aggressive deployment of every last bit of available low-carbon technology starting ASAP. Anyone who isn’t in favor of that strategy understands neither climate science nor the current state of clean energy. Sadly, that covers most of the traditional media and so-called intelligentsia."

By the numbers: U.S. warming
OK, I admit it--I'm a numbers geek, er, guy.
Graphics are good, but numbers are better. It's fun to poke around them and try to understand the story they are telling.
A while ago, inspired by the Great March 2012 Heat Wave, I expressed concern about the ratio of new high daily temperatures across the U.S. to new low daily temperatures. I reposted a graphic from the blog Capital Climate that seemed to me to suggest that the high ratios of months like March 2012 (35:1, here after just "35") and January 2012 (22) indicated that wild swings in temperature are growing greater--that the weather system was looking more and more unstable due to global warming.
The Capital Climate graphic, however, didn't show everything I needed to confirm that hypothesis. In this particular iteration (the blog has published others previously, covering different time periods), only ratios from 2011 and 2012 were shown--not enough to get a feel for just how unusual the March and January ratios were. So I decided to go digging.
A week later (this is tedious and time-consuming work), I've created an Excel spreadsheet that shows new daily highs, new daily lows, and their ratio for months in the years 1993-2012. I also flipped ahead and took a peek at 1988 and 1936, two previous years with remarkable heat waves. All data is from the National Climate Data Center (NCDC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), which maintains an online database of temperature extremes at http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/extremes/records/.
There's still quite a bit of work to do (the database covers years back to 1850!), but even with the limited portion I've completed, there are some interesting results:
First, ratios of new highs to lows in recent years are not toooo extreme. While March 2012 (35) and January 2012 (22) are definitely unusual, there are other wilder outliers in the historical record. January 2006 (58:1) is the biggest I've found so far, and November 1999 (53) and February 2000 (50) also achieved ratios of 50 or better.
Second, there is a clear warming trend. That trend is, I think, best illustrated by looking at some yearly records:
Most recent year in which new daily lows exceeded new daily highs: 1997, with 16,469 new lows versus 15,964 new highs. That's a stopper right there, since if the climate were stable, it would be unusual for there to be 14 straight years (1998 through 2011) in which new highs exceeded new lows.
Most recent year with 20,000 or more new daily lows: 1996 (23,160).
Most recent year with 20,000 or more new daily highs: 2007 (26,067).
One might speculate that the number of new records is decreasing over time as the temperature data set gets longer/larger, but there's no reason for highs to exceed lows unless the average temperature is increasing.
Most recent year with 15,000 or more new daily lows: 2002 (18,166).
Most recent year with 15,000 or more new daily highs: 2012 (18,164 and counting, through July 7).
Pretty hard to refute this very impressive data. 2003, 2005, 2006, 2007, and 2011 also had more than 15,000 new daily highs.
Most recent year with 10,000 or more new daily lows: 2007 (10,355).
2010, 2011, 2012 all surpassed 10,000 new daily highs.
Number of months since January 1, 1993, with a ratio of new lows to new highs exceeding 10:1: 1 (March 1997, with a ratio of 12.7:1).
The following months since that date have had ratios of new highs to new lows exceeding 10:1: January 1995 (17), February 1997 (16), January 1998 (12), July 1998 (16), September 1998 (17), November 1998 (21), December 1998 (14), November 1999 (53), January 2000 (12), February 2000 (53), March 2000 (40), November 2001 (14), December 2001 (12), January 2002 (15), August 2003 (12), October 2003 (11), March 2004 (21), February 2005 (18), January 2006 (58), August 2007 (13), June 2011 (10), August 2011 (22), January 2012 (22) and March 2012 (35)--a total of 24 months in all.
Highest ratio of new highs to new lows for a year: 1998 (4.04).
At the moment, 2012 is on track to easily surpass 1998 (currently, its ratio is a remarkable 11.7), but the record makes it clear that significant changes can take place in a few months.
More generally, this work is inspired not only by the Great June-July 2012 Heat Wave, which we have just finished, but by a study of the ratio of new highs to new lows completed in 2009 by authors from the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Climate Central, The Weather Channel, and NOAA. That study found the following ratios by decade:
1950s: 1.09 (to 1)
1960s: 0.77
1970s: 0.78
1980s: 1.14
1990s: 1.36
2000s: 2.04
The decadal record has the effect of smoothing variations and making it clear that since the 1990s, the ratio has taken a jump, with a larger increase from the 1990s to 2000s than any previous change. (I hope to extend this back to at least the 1930s and 1940s, since the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s had multiple very hot summers.)
I'll be continuing to build out my spreadsheet in the coming weeks, and will keep you posted on what I find.

How the New York Times could cover global warming
I've complained (hmmm, maybe "ranted" is the appropriate word) here previously about the New York Times and its "coverage" of global warming.
It's interesting to compare that coverage with the Times' coverage of Congress. The e-mail alert (from the Times) for the breaking story of the day on Saturday, December 17, reads, in pertinent part, as follows:
“Senate Votes to Extend Payroll Tax Cut for Two Months
“WASHINGTON — In the ultimate cap to a year of last-minute, half-loaf legislation, the Senate voted overwhelmingly on Saturday to extend a payroll tax cut for a two months, with the chamber’s leaders and the White House proclaiming victory, even as they pushed the issue of how to extend the tax cut and unemployment benefits into the new year. …
“The agreement — should it get through the House — mirrors a series of 11th-hour deals devised by the the 112th Congress that appear to solve an impending crisis, but simply push it forward …
“A failure to even extend a modest tax break for 160 million Americans for a single year — something both sides would love as political feathers in their election-year caps — is particularly remarkable in a Congress charged with far more significant items.
“‘Today is an important day for our country,’ said Senator Harry Reid of Nevada, the majority leader, as he explained from the Senate floor Saturday why his chamber would be voting on a bill, conceived Friday in private between Senate leaders to extend the tax for only two months. ‘We are doing today exactly what the Founding Fathers thought we would do,’ and passage of the bills is ‘an accomplishment important for the American people.’
Notice that the reporting is very judgmental--I have bolded some of the pieces of the text that, while they are arguably accurate reporting, also appear to express the personal views of the reporter. Certainly, they are not "straight reporting." Also, the article positions the quote from Reid in such a way as to make him appear either openly cynical or stupid.
The NYT does this regularly with political news, so its reporters do know how to take a position, in a news story. The mystery is why it is so assiduous about writing news stories about global warming as neutrally (and even cluelessly) as possible. It has, for example, carried lengthy articles about the recent rash of wildfires in the western U.S. and on the record-breaking Texas drought of 2011 without mentioning global warming at all. Its blog even reported on the most well-known skeptic politician, U.S. Sen. James Inhofe (R-Okla.), sending a self-congratulatory message to skeptics at the Cancun international climate conference--without any discussion of the climate science he belittles.
That said, some credit is due. On the same day as the story above, it carried a long story on methane that actually discusses climate science as if it were settled. I hope it's the beginning of a sea change, but at this point, it's hard to be optimistic.

Update from the Terra Incognita of rain
"Terra Incognita" is my metaphorical phrase for describing the previously unknown weather (well, unknown at least in the weather records) that is now being brought to us, around the world, by global warming. Here's a quick update from one part of that unknown land--the rainy one.
A few days ago, Joe Romm's excellent Climate Progress blog ran a post by Dr. Jeff Masters of Weather Underground (wunderground.com) about the new records for rainfall that have been set in the Northeastern U.S. this year. Dr. Masters emphasized the fact that Philadelphia, which has one of the longest weather records (and therefore extremes that are very hard to top) had set a new record with its rainiest year since the start of rainfall record-keeping in 1820. But some other numbers in his list of new 2011 records seem to me even more striking. Here they are:
Williamsport, PA, rainfall records dating from 1895: broke old record by 7.1 inches (180 mm) (11.5%).
Cleveland, OH, records since 1855: broke old record by 8.51 inches (216 mm) (15.8%)
Harrisburg, PA, records since 1861: broke old record by 12.29 inches (312 mm) (20.5%).
Binghamton, NY, records since 1890: broke old record by 16.61 inches (422 mm) (33.7%)
In each case, we're talking about weather records dating back more than a century, and the old rainfall records are not just being surpassed, they're being obliterated.
The bottom line? Global warming means new weather coming, to a place near you. It may be hotter, or dryer, or wetter than ever before, but whichever it is, we're off the old weather charts and into new territory.
